Porto
Porto and the River Douro are on the Gaia side, where the Port Wine lodges are located. The city of Porto is now becoming a popular tourist destination. There is a lot to see and do in Porto.
Porto is situated along the Costa Verde where you will find sandy beaches. Along this coastline are beach resorts, including Espinho, Vila do Conde, Povoa de Varzim and Costa Nova.
Close to Porto are the small beaches of the Foz district, while the largest sandy beach is the Praia de Matosinhos.

Porto and Languages
English and other languages are widely spoken by those who work within the tourist industry.  Railway stations, the metro and airports also offer English translations and signposting. Most restaurants and cafes in Porto offer multi language menus.
Renting a Car
In Porto you will not need to rent a car because of the cities excellent public transport.  Driving in Porto can also be confusing because of their road layouts and limited parking.
Port Wine
The grapes that are used to make Port wine are grown in the mountainous Upper Douro region of Porto. This protected region is the only place in the world that can produce authentic Port.

The Douro area is also the most challenging grape growing region on earth. This is because of Its mountainous terrain and steep winding valleys. The terrain also offers the Douro region different micro climates.

Port wine is a type of fortified wine which is fermented by adding a 77% spirit half way through its production. This will also raise the alcohol level and keep the natural sugars of the grapes.
Vila Nova De Gaia
Vila Nova de Gaia is a city which is strongly associated with Port Wine. It is a city located on the left bank of the river Douro. Gaia also offers beaches and has open views over the historical centre of Porto.

The historic centre of Gaia is smaller than that of Porto, but it offers a very peaceful atmosphere.

The small church of Santa Marinha, is a good starting point to walk in Gaia.

To take in Porto these view points are the best in Gaia. Serra do Pilar, Graham’s restaurant, Yeatman’s bar, Porto Cruz’s terrace, Calçada da Serra street and car park.
Zoo
Vila Nova de Gaia also has the Zoo Santo Inácio. The zoo brings awareness of wildlife protection and animal welfare. All animals live according to their original environment by providing them the best conditions for living healthy.

The Zoo is also home to around 1,000 animals and offers extensive green areas to relax. There are daily shows with birds of prey, reptiles and wildlife, letting you get up close to the animals. One of the main attractions of the zoo is watching the penguins during feeding time.
Biological Park
The Gaia Biological Park is a 35-hectare environmental education centre. Here you will find hundreds of animal species roaming wild. More than 40 species of wild birds nest in the park and many more visit during migrations.

You will find deer in enclosures, and the European bison which became extinct in the wild in 1921. The park also offers a 3 km trail where you can visit the rural houses. Along the trail you will also see reconditioned mills, lakes, and small exhibits.
Cable Car In Porto
A great way to see the Port wine area in Vila Nova de Gaia is to take the cable car from the top of the town. From the town the car travels down to Cais de Gaia, on the river bank.

The cable car was built between March 2009 and April 2011. The upper station puts you close to the Metro station. Here you can either take a tram across the river to Porto city centre, or you can walk across the bridge.
