Lagos
Lagos which is situated on the western part of the Algarve also has a lot of history. Throughout the years Lagos has become a respected holiday destination for many tourists. The area also offers its visitors beaches, buzzing nightlife and a charming historic centre. Lagos also has numerous enjoyable day trips which are easily accessible by public transport or arranged tours.

In the area you will also find water parks, zoos and historic monuments and much more. Lagos town centre is also surrounded by the ancient Moorish walls which extends along the harbour.

To the east of Lagos you will find the 4 kilometre long beach of Meia Praia. The beach is also the longest beach which sits on the western side of the Algarve. There are many interesting day trips from Lagos which includes the towns of Sagres, Silves, Luz and Portimão.

There is a local market on Saturday mornings in a building near the bus station. The market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, olives, honey, figs, almonds and much more. It’s quite a small market, but very popular and cheap
Lagos Zoo
Located a few kilometres outside of the popular resort town itself is Lagos Zoo. The zoo offers plenty of animals among the beautiful landscaped subtropical gardens.

There are around 120 species of animal at the zoo. These include a good variety of birds such as toucans, pelicans, flamingos and parrots. There are exotic species including dwarf crocodiles, which complement the pygmy hippos nicely. “Monkey Island” which, as the name suggests, is a small island on which a range of primates roam free. These include gibbons, lemurs and a host of monkeys.

Lagos Zoo is a great place to visit for those of all ages. There are two playground and a petting zoo featuring small farm animals which you can feed by hand.

The zoo tries to promote some conservation values with educational displays. Visitors can also view the incubation room where baby birds are hatched. You can also visit the “create room” in which baby animals are reared by hand.

Animals aside, the park is still a pleasant place to spend a day. With over 200 species of plants from around the world.
